KPS Project Van Dusen Visitor Centre Construction Building City

VanDusen Visitor Centre
Vancouver

Project info

The VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre houses administration offices, classrooms, educational exhibit space, flexible meeting space, a library, food service, and a garden shop. The building design is incredibly unique and striking. The roof edges are formed by multiple undulating ‘petals’ growing from an oculus at the center. The petals are highlighted by Natural Brushed Alucobond panels that we designed, fabricated, and installed. It was a challenging endeavour, but with the use of 3D modelling software, we were able to coordinate with the Design and Construction team to successfully achieve the complex curving geometry with architectural metal.

Alucobond was used on this project for its ability to meet both the strict sustainability criteria and to meet the requirements of the challenging asymmetrical design. The unique character and flexibility of the composite aluminum material allowed us to achieve complex curvilinear forms without introducing undesired rippling in the panel surface.
