Hummingbird Child Care Centre
Richmond
Project info
Completed in 2020, the Hummingbird Child Care Centre showcases an exterior façade that masterfully integrates with its surroundings, reflecting both natural and historical elements of Richmond. Designed by Public Architecture and developed by Aspac Developments, the building’s façade features custom-CNC cut Fundermax panels that pay homage to the neighboring oaks and the center’s namesake: hummingbirds. The choice of materials and colour palette, link the design to the site’s natural landscape and its agricultural past. The high-pressure laminate’s intricate patterns and textures are a nod to the area’s environmental context, creating a seamless connection between the building and its environment.
The design of the facility’s awning further enriches the historical narrative, with its zigzag pattern reflecting the architectural influences of Richmond’s settler past. This reference encompasses the unique styles of Chinese-Canadian greenhouses, Japanese boatbuilding works, and European-Canadian dairy barns, drawing on the region’s diverse cultural and architectural heritage. The project, constructed by Jakin Engineering, stands as a tribute to the community’s rich history and natural beauty.
